How to Auto-Post from WordPress to X (Twitter)

November 27, 2013

Sharing every new blog post to Twitter used to be a free, set-and-forget job. Since Twitter became X, that has changed. X closed its free API in 2023, Jetpack dropped X from its auto-sharing in May 2023, and posting through the X API now costs money per post. Auto-posting from WordPress to X still works, but you need to pick the right tool and know what it costs.

This guide covers the options that work today, what each one costs, and the simplest choice for a small blog.

What changed, in short

  • Jetpack Social no longer posts to X. Jetpack announced the end of Twitter auto-sharing in April 2023, and since 18 May 2023 X is no longer part of Jetpack Social. It still shares to Facebook, Instagram, Threads, LinkedIn, Tumblr, Mastodon, Nextdoor and Bluesky.
  • The X API is pay-per-use. Since February 2026, X charges per API request with no subscription required. Creating a post costs $0.015, and creating a post that contains a link costs $0.20. A blog auto-post always contains a link, so expect about $0.20 for each post you share. X notes that prices can change, so check the current pricing page before you commit.
  • Some tools need your own X developer app, which means paying X directly. Others include X access in a paid plan.

Option 1: Revive Social (free plugin, your own X keys)

Revive Social is a maintained WordPress plugin with over 20,000 active installs. Its free version can publish new posts to X automatically when you hit Publish.

The catch: Revive Social does not provide X API keys. You create your own app in the X developer console, add its keys to the plugin, and pay X for the API usage at the per-post rates above.

  • Good for: bloggers who want full control and do not mind setting up an X developer app.
  • Cost: the plugin is free; X API usage is paid per post.

Option 2: Blog2Social (paid X add-on, no developer app)

Blog2Social is one of the most popular social sharing plugins, with over 40,000 active installs. It shares to 14 networks for free, but X is not one of them. X is sold as a separate add-on, and it requires one of Blog2Social's paid licenses (Smart, Pro or Business).

The X add-on is priced by monthly volume: 70 posts for $14.99 a month, 100 posts for $24.99 a month, or 250 posts for $59.99 a month. In return you do not need your own X developer app. Blog2Social explained in November 2024 that X no longer allows personal API keys for social media management in its setup, which is why it moved to this model.

  • Good for: sites that post to many networks and want X handled inside one paid tool.
  • Cost: a paid Blog2Social license plus the X add-on.

Option 3: NextScripts SNAP (your own apps)

NextScripts Social Networks Auto-Poster has been around for years and still lists X ("Twitter") as an auto-post destination. Like Revive Social, it uses your own apps, so you need an X developer app and you pay X for usage. It has more than 20,000 active installs.

Option 4: Services outside WordPress (dlvr.it and IFTTT)

If you would rather not add another plugin, an outside service can watch your RSS feed and post new articles to X for you.

dlvr.it

dlvr.it has offered RSS-to-social posting for over a decade and is still running. It auto-posts to Facebook, Twitter (X), LinkedIn, Pinterest, TikTok and more, and it can schedule posts. You connect your WordPress feed (usually yoursite.com/feed) and your X account, and it posts each new article.

IFTTT

IFTTT has an X service with actions to post a tweet, a tweet with an image, or a tweet with a video. Pair it with the RSS feed trigger and every new post on your blog becomes a post on X.

Zapier, another common choice in older guides, stopped its Twitter integration on 31 August 2023, so do not rely on old Zapier tutorials.

Option 5: Share by hand

For a small blog that publishes a few times a week, sharing by hand is often the best option. It is free, and you control exactly what each post says. Paste the article link into X with a line or two about why it is worth reading. Jetpack's support page notes that sharing a link by hand still works, even though its auto-sharing no longer covers X.

How to set up auto-posting (general steps)

  1. Pick your tool from the options above, based on whether you want to pay X directly (Revive Social, NextScripts) or pay for a service (Blog2Social add-on, dlvr.it).
  2. If the tool needs your own keys, sign in to the X developer console with your X account, create an app, and copy its keys into the plugin. You will also need to add a payment method and buy API credits.
  3. Connect your X account in the plugin or service.
  4. Set the post format, usually the article title and link, plus a hashtag or two if you use them.
  5. Publish a test post and check it appears on X correctly, with the link preview card.

Which option should you choose?

  • A few posts a week: share by hand, or use Revive Social with your own keys (about $0.20 per post at current X prices).
  • Many networks, one tool: Blog2Social with the X add-on.
  • No extra WordPress plugins: dlvr.it or IFTTT using your RSS feed.
  • You already use Jetpack: keep it for Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky and the rest, and add one of the options above for X.

FAQ

Why did my WordPress posts stop sharing to Twitter?

Most likely your tool relied on the free Twitter API or on Jetpack's old Twitter connection. Both ended in 2023. Reconnect using one of the tools above.

Is there still a free way to auto-post to X?

Not fully. The plugins themselves can be free, but posting through the X API is charged per post. Manual sharing remains free.

Does Jetpack Social support X?

No. X has not been part of Jetpack Social since May 2023. It supports Facebook, Instagram, Threads, LinkedIn, Tumblr, Mastodon, Nextdoor and Bluesky.

How much does it cost to auto-post one article to X?

Through the X API, a post that contains a link currently costs $0.20. Through Blog2Social's X add-on, it depends on the monthly plan, from $14.99 for 70 posts.
