Frequently Asked Questions

What is an ex-dividend date?

The ex-dividend date is the cutoff date to be eligible for a dividend. You must own the shares before the ex-dividend date to receive the payment. If you buy shares on or after the ex-dividend date, you will not receive the upcoming dividend. The payment date is usually 4-6 weeks after the ex-dividend date.

What does fully franked mean on the ASX?

A fully franked dividend means the company has paid the full 30% corporate tax on the profits distributed. Shareholders receive franking credits equal to 30/70 of the dividend, which can be offset against personal income tax. A 50% franked dividend means only half the corporate tax was paid, giving partial franking credits.

Which ASX stocks have the highest dividend yield in 2025?

As of 2025, some of the highest-yielding major ASX stocks include Fortescue (FMG) at around 9-10%, ANZ at ~6%, NAB at ~5%, Suncorp at ~5% and Westpac at ~5.5%. High yields can indicate value but may also reflect price falls or business challenges — always consider payout sustainability.

How often do Australian companies pay dividends?

Most major ASX companies pay dividends twice a year (half-yearly): one interim dividend (typically February/March results) and one final dividend (August/September results). Some companies like Telstra pay quarterly. REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts) often pay quarterly or monthly distributions.
