Uber vs Lyft: Coverage, Ride Types and Memberships

November 6, 2026

Pick Uber if you travel outside the US and Canada, want food delivery in the same app, or need a taxi, pet-friendly or shared ride option. Pick Lyft if you ride mostly in the US or Canada, want a cheaper $4.99 membership tier, or already order from DoorDash.

Both apps are free to download and offer larger and premium cars alongside everyday rides. Since fares change by city and time of day, the useful differences are coverage, ride types and memberships.

Which is cheaper, Uber or Lyft?

Neither is always cheaper. Both price each trip based on the city, distance and demand at that moment, so the only reliable way to save is to check both apps before you book. Uber shows an upfront price for each ride. Lyft's App Store listing says prices vary based on market conditions.

Each app also has a budget option. Lyft lists Wait & Save and Priority Pickup options, and Uber lists UberX Share alongside UberX, so compare those options in each app too.

Is Uber One or Lyft Go the better membership?

Lyft Go gives more ride credit per dollar; Uber One is better if you order food often through Uber Eats. On 6 November 2026, we read both membership pages. Uber One cost $9.99 a month, with Uber One credits on eligible rides, a $0 delivery fee on standard deliveries within at least 3 miles from participating stores, and a discounted service fee. First-time members can get a 4-week free trial.

Lyft Go also cost $9.99 a month, or $96 a year. It gives 8% back on rides, bikes and scooters, up to $40 a month in Lyft credits, plus DoorDash's DashPass with $0 delivery fees on eligible orders. It also includes three relaxed ride cancellations a month and no fee for items left in a car. A cheaper Lyft Go Core tier costs $4.99 a month and gives 5% back, up to $20 a month. Lyft offers a month free to try it.

If you only ride occasionally, Lyft Go Core is the lowest-cost membership of the two. If your household already uses DoorDash, Lyft Go bundles it in.

Which works in more places?

Uber, by a long way. Uber's cities page says it operates in more than 15,000 cities, and its country list covers the United States, Canada, Mexico, the UK, much of Europe, India, Japan, Australia, Brazil, South Africa and more.

Lyft says it covers over 650 cities across the US and Canada. It has started in Europe too: its cities page offers US and Canada riders early access to Lyft in Europe. If you are travelling outside North America, install Uber, or check our list of Lyft alternatives, which covers Bolt for Europe, Africa and Mexico and Curb for US taxis.

Which has more ride options?

Uber has more car types; Lyft leans into bikes, scooters and transit. Uber's app lists UberX, Electric, UberXL for groups of up to 6, Comfort, Comfort Electric, Uber Pet, Black, Taxi, 2-wheels and UberX Share. You can also reserve rides in advance and order food through Uber Eats in the same app.

Lyft's app lists Wait & Save, Priority Pickup, bikes and scooters, Lyft XL, Lyft Lux, transit and rentals. Its listing also mentions a self-driving pilot with Waymo in Nashville.

Which should you choose?

  • You travel abroad: Uber, available in far more countries.
  • You live in the US or Canada and ride a few times a month: install both and compare the fare each time.
  • You want the cheapest membership: Lyft Go Core at $4.99 a month.
  • You order a lot of food delivery: Uber One for Uber Eats, or Lyft Go if you use DoorDash.
  • You travel with a pet: Uber Pet.
  • You want a bike or scooter for short trips: Lyft, which lists bikes and scooters in the app (Uber lists 2-wheels).
  • You need a car for a group of up to 6: UberXL, or compare Lyft XL in the Lyft app.
