Signal vs Telegram: Encryption, Groups and Privacy Compared

November 6, 2026

Pick Signal if privacy is the reason you are switching: every message, call and group chat is end-to-end encrypted by default, and it is run by a nonprofit with no ads. Pick Telegram if you want huge groups and channels, cloud sync across many devices and big file sharing, and you accept that normal chats are not end-to-end encrypted.

Both apps are free, are tied to your phone number, and let people reach you by username instead of your number. They are built for different jobs: Signal for private conversations, Telegram for communities and convenience.

Is Signal more secure than Telegram?

Yes, for message privacy. Signal uses end-to-end encryption, powered by its open source Signal Protocol, for every message and call. Signal says privacy is not an optional mode: it applies to every message, every call, every time, and Signal cannot read your messages or listen to your calls.

Telegram works differently. On 6 November 2026, we read through Telegram's FAQ. It says Telegram uses server-client encryption for Cloud Chats, which include private and group chats, and that only Secret Chats add a second layer of client-to-client (end-to-end) encryption. Secret Chats are device-specific: they are not part of the Telegram cloud and can only be opened on the devices where they started.

So a normal Telegram chat, and every Telegram group, is encrypted between your device and Telegram's servers and kept in Telegram's cloud, but it is not end-to-end encrypted. Telegram's own advice for people worried about their safety is to use only Secret Chats for sensitive information, preferably with a self-destruct timer, and to turn on two-step verification.

Telegram voice and video calls, including group calls of up to 200 people, are end-to-end encrypted.

Which is better for groups and channels?

Telegram. Its groups can have up to 200,000 members, and channels let you broadcast to an unlimited audience. Groups have admin tools, public links and an option to show new members the earlier history.

Signal groups top out at 1,000 members, and Signal group calls at 75 people. That is plenty for family, friends and work teams, but Signal is not built for public communities of thousands.

Which is easier to use on several devices?

Telegram. Because it is a cloud messenger, you can log in on as many devices as you like at the same time, and your cloud chats sync instantly. You can send files of up to 2 GB each, or 4 GB with Premium.

Signal runs on Android, iPhone and iPad, with desktop apps for Windows, Mac and Linux. Its focus is keeping messages private rather than storing them in a cloud for easy access everywhere.

Who runs Signal and Telegram, and how are they paid for?

Signal is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit. It says it is not tied to any major tech company, can never be acquired by one, and is funded by grants and donations. There are no ads, no affiliate marketers and no tracking.

Telegram says private messaging is free and will stay free, with no ads and no subscription fees in private chats. It launched sponsored messages in certain public channels in 2021 and a paid Premium subscription in 2022, which unlocks extra features such as larger uploads.

Both hide your phone number to a degree. Signal no longer shows your number to everyone by default, and you can create a username so people can reach you without it. Telegram lets people find you by username too.

Signal goes one step further if you want it to. You can choose not to let anyone discover you by phone number, even people who already have it saved, so they need your exact username to start a chat. Telegram, for its part, offers verifiable builds, which let experts confirm that the iOS and Android apps in the app stores were built from the same code Telegram publishes on GitHub.

If you are looking beyond these two, our list of Signal alternatives covers other private messengers.
