Intercom vs Zendesk: Pricing, AI Agents and Live Chat
Pick Intercom if your support happens mostly in live chat inside your website or app and you want an AI agent priced per resolved conversation. Pick Zendesk if you run an email-first ticket queue, need a phone line built in, or want a $19 plan that covers just email and ticketing.
Both are paid help desks with no free plan and a 14-day trial. They start at the same headline price, so the real difference is in which channels each plan includes and how each one charges for AI.

Which is cheaper, Intercom or Zendesk?
They start at the same $19, but what you get for it differs. Intercom shows its Essential plan at $19 per seat a month, marked down from $29 with a note that new customers save 35%. Advanced is $85 and Expert is $132 per seat. The page has a toggle for annual or monthly billing, so the price you pay depends on which you choose.
Zendesk lists both billing cycles clearly. Support Team is $19 per agent a month paid yearly or $25 paid monthly. Suite Team is $55 or $69, and Suite Professional is $115 or $149.
The catch is channels. Zendesk's $19 Support Team plan covers email and ticketing, but most chat and voice features start on Suite Team at $55. Intercom's $19 Essential plan already includes its Messenger chat widget, a shared inbox with ticketing and a public help center. So for a small team that mainly needs website chat, Intercom's entry plan does more for the money. For a team that only answers email, Zendesk Support Team is enough.
Startups can get more off. Intercom's Early Stage program offers up to 93% off plus a year of Fin, and Zendesk's startup page offers a 6-month trial of the Zendesk Suite for up to 50 agents.
How do their AI agents compare on price?
Intercom charges less per AI answer, while Zendesk includes a few in every seat. On 6 November 2026, we compared the two pricing pages. Intercom's Fin AI Agent cost $0.99 per outcome, where an outcome means the customer confirms the issue is fixed, stops asking after Fin replies, or Fin completes a workflow. Each conversation is charged once.
Zendesk bills AI agents per automated resolution, meaning a request solved without a human. Support Team and Suite Team include 5 per agent each month and Suite Professional includes 10. Beyond that, each resolution costs $1.50 on a commitment or $2.00 pay-as-you-go.
For a small team with lots of repetitive questions, Intercom's per-outcome rate adds up more slowly. For a large team with modest AI use, Zendesk's included resolutions may cover most of it.
Which is better for live chat versus email tickets?
Intercom is built around chat; Zendesk is built around tickets. Intercom says live chat, support email, in-app chats, banners and tooltips are free and unlimited on all plans. Its higher plans add multiple team inboxes, a workflow automation builder, round robin assignment and a multilingual help center.
Zendesk's plans grow from ticketing outwards. Support Team handles email, ticket routing, pre-written responses and automations. Suite Team adds messaging, live chat, telephony and omnichannel routing, and Suite Professional adds skills-based routing, IVR phone menus and help centers in 40+ languages.
Which is better for phone support?
Zendesk. Telephony, including voicemail, is part of Suite Team and above. On Intercom, phone, SMS, WhatsApp and email campaigns are pay-as-you-go extras on top of your plan.
