Android Marshmallow (Android 6.0) was released in October 2015 and focused on user permissions and battery optimization.

Key Features

  • Granular app permissions
  • Doze mode for battery savings
  • App Standby
  • Native fingerprint support
  • USB Type-C support
  • Direct Share feature
  • Adoptable storage (SD cards as internal)
  • Now on Tap (Google Assistant precursor)

App Permissions

Marshmallow changed how permissions work:

  • Apps request permissions at runtime
  • Users can grant or deny individual permissions
  • Permissions can be revoked anytime
  • No more all-or-nothing installation

Doze Mode

Doze significantly improves standby battery life by deferring background activity when the device is stationary and unused.
