Genshin Impact vs Honkai: Star Rail: Which Should You Play?
Pick Genshin Impact if you want a big open world to explore, real-time action combat built on elemental reactions, co-op with friends, or you play on Xbox. Pick Honkai: Star Rail if you prefer slower, turn-based battles you can plan, a story-led space adventure, and a game that is easy to play in short sessions on your phone.
Both are free-to-play gacha RPGs from HoYoverse, published by the same company (COGNOSPHERE PTE. LTD. on the App Store), and both sell optional in-game purchases that include random items. The choice comes down to how you like to fight and where you want to play.

What is the main difference between Genshin and Star Rail?
The combat. Genshin Impact is a real-time action RPG, and Honkai: Star Rail is turn-based.
In Genshin you control your character directly and build a party of characters to fight alongside. Its combat is built on seven elements (Anemo, Electro, Hydro, Pyro, Cryo, Dendro and Geo) that react with each other. As the game's own listing puts it, you can "vaporize Hydro with Pyro, electro-charge it with Electro, or freeze it with Cryo." Reflexes and timing matter.
Star Rail's PlayStation page describes "newcomer-friendly but challenging-to-master turn-based combat", where you combine Basic Attacks and Skills and finish with Ultimates. Its App Store listing adds team compositions matched to enemy weaknesses, Weakness Break, follow-up attacks and damage over time. You have time to think on every turn, which suits players who enjoy planning more than fast hands.
Which has the better world to explore?
Genshin, if exploration is what you want. Its listing promises a "massive open world" where you can "climb any mountain, swim across any river, and glide over the world below." Its listing also hints at things to find off the main path, like a wandering Seelie or a strange mechanism.
Star Rail is structured as a journey on the Astral Express, a train that stops at different worlds: a space station, a planet with an eternal winter, a starship and more. The game is built around its story and characters, with each world as a new chapter. Beyond the main battles it also offers simulation management modes, mini-games and puzzle exploration.
Can you play with friends?
Only Genshin clearly supports it. Genshin's App Store listing invites you to "team up with friends across various platforms" for boss fights and domains, and its PlayStation Store page lists 4 online players. When Genshin launched on Xbox in November 2024, Xbox Wire confirmed "cross-play and cross-progression across platforms including Xbox, PlayStation, PC, Android, iOS, and the Epic Games Store."
Star Rail's App Store description is about a solo story and turn-based team building; it does not mention co-op play. If playing alongside friends matters, Genshin is the safer pick.
Which runs on more devices?
Genshin, by one console. Both games are on Windows PC through HoYoverse's HoYoPlay launcher, on PS5 and on iOS and Android. Genshin is also on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Cloud Gaming. We did not find an Xbox version of Star Rail on any official page.
We checked the US App Store on 6 November 2026. Genshin Impact was at version 7.2.0, last updated on 3 November 2026, with an iOS download of about 3.6 GB. Honkai: Star Rail was at version 4.6.1, last updated on 29 September 2026, at about 3.8 GB. Both are rated 12+ and both are free. Plan for that storage before you install either one on a phone.
Which is cheaper to play?
Both cost nothing to download and play, and spending is optional. Each sells premium currency and a low-cost pass. On Xbox, Genshin's Blessing of the Welkin Moon is $4.99. On PlayStation, Star Rail's Express Supply Pass is $4.99 and its Oneiric Shard packs run from $0.99 to $99.99. Both store pages warn that purchases include random items, which is how gacha character pulls work. If you plan to spend, set a budget first.
