Dolphin Emulator – Play Nintendo Games on Your Phone

Do you miss playing classic games on your Nintendo Wii like Super Mario Bros or Super Smash Bros but don’t have access to your Wii (Nintendo video console) device now?

Don’t worry, I have got you a solution to play your favorite Nintendo games on your smartphone. The solution is an app called “Dolphin Emulator”

What is Dolphin Emulator?

You may be familiar with an emulator. If not, Emulator is a software that enables one computer system to behave and perfume like some other computer system. It can be used to use softwares from one platform to another that does not support it officially.

Dolphin Emulator is such an emulator which allows you to play the Nintendo Wii & GameCube games on your smartphone without much hassle.

Availability

The emulator is available on almost all the major platforms like Windows, MacOS, Linux & Android. However, we are concerned only with the Android version for this review.

The Android version is still in beta phase and they update it every month for improvements.

Which Phones are Supported ?

Emulators generally consume more resources of your device. Hence, it is better to have a phone with high specifications.

Minimum requirements to use the emulator are:

• A phone having 64 bit architecture.
• 2 GB minimum RAM
• Have at least Android lollipop 5.0 or up.

If you don’t know the specs of your phone, just install the app and if you don’t get any error message, you’re good to go.

How to Install and Use

1. Install the app from Playstore or alternatively from Softstribe.
2. Open the app, if you got no error message, your phone is supported.
3. You have got two tabs, one is Wii & the second is GameCube.
4. To start and load a game, click on the + button at the right bottom part of the screen.
5. Select the game file from your phone’s storage and it will load the game.
6. Additionally, if you don’t enjoy the virtual controls of the game, you can use a Bluetooth controller with your phone.
7. To use it, click on the menu at the upper right of screen and choose GameCube or Wii input. From here, you can connect a controller.

Which Formats are Supported?

The emulator supports ISO/ROMS officially. But can also work with GCZ, CISO, and WBFS formats.

How to Download Games?

Downloading and installing Nintendo classic games is illegal, so I can’t share any game file for you here. But you can make a quick Google search to download games.

However, the official method is to buy the games and then dump it yourself using a Wii. If you don’t own a Wii device, take some help from a friend who owns it.

How it Performs ?

Mostly, emulators are slow and laggy and you cannot enjoy playing games on them. However, my experience with Dolphin emulator was satisfactory and enjoyable.

I used the emulator with a 3 GB phone having Android 8.1 Oreo. I played Super Smash Bros and Mario Party 5.

Both of the games performed well with only a few frame drops. Such kind of performance is acceptable and I really enjoyed playing these games.

The Dolphin Emulator is free to install and use but the games are not included. You have to get the games on your own.

Although it is in beta stage, the performance is satisfactory. There are some drawbacks and frame drops but it is acceptable. Moreover, the developers are putting efforts to improve it and they update it on a monthly basis.
