What is Google Duo?
Google Duo is an app with which you can audio and video call your loved ones, just like Apple’s FaceTime, WhatsApp and also Skype.
It was launched back in 2016 and is one of the many apps which lets you video and audio call offered by Google.
Though Google already has launched other apps for the same purpose but Duo is unique and different in itself as it is very easy to use just like the FaceTime offered by Apple.
One thing about Duo that is very beneficial is that the Android and iOS users can communicate through it with each other, which means that it is cross platform. This feature is not offered by FaceTime , unfortunately.
Duo requires your number to video and audio call someone. You can call people on their number with Duo present in your friend list. If they do not have the app installed in their phones, Duo will send an invitation message to them to install the app.
Duo also offers its users end to end encryption which means the calls can’t be tapped so it is very safe to use in theory. Plus the interface of the app is very simple compared to other apps.
Google Duo also allows you to create group, call and talk to more than one person by calling the whole group in real time. The app is free of cost and can be downloaded from both Google and Apple play store.
Features of Google Duo
Google Duo has a very simple interface and is very easy to use. It has almost the same functionality as WhatsApp as it requires you to register your number in order to call someone.
Here are some cool features offered by Duo that will help you know the app in a better way and make the most of it.
Duo call history
The people you have recently called or talked to will be shown at the bottom of the Duo’s call history. There are same basic feature that are lacked by the history, like how much was the duration of the call and what time the call was made or received.
In order to look at your call history, you would have to open the dialer or phone app in your device. This is because the call history is integrated by Google in to your smartphone’s dialer app in both Android and iOS as well.
Call directly from your dialer app
Duo allows its users to make calls directly from their dialer app, without the need of opening the Duo app. You can simply just open the dialer app, tap on the person’s contact that you want to call. Click on Duo video or voice call.
Knock Knock feature
Knock knock is an interesting but a bit spooky feature that is offered by Duo and you will find it enabled by default.
This feature lets you see the callers live video before they have even answered the call which is very creepy. Fortunately you can disable it from the settings.
To turn this feature off, all you need to do is click on the three dots given on the home page of Duo. You will see the menu option, tap on it and now you will see the Settings. Here you will find the Knock Knock feature which can be disabled from the next screen.
Picture in Picture Mode
Google launched this feature with Android Oreo 8.0. This feature lets you use other apps in yur phone while you are still on the call.
To use this feature, simply tap on the home button while you are o the Duo call. The video will now appear in a small box of the screen rather than disconnecting.
If the PIP feature is not supported by your device, only audio will be heard when you tap on the home button while you are on the Duo call.
Most of us have been in an awkward situation when an unavoidable sound or gibberish talks around us interrupt our video calls.
Your audio can simply be muted, while you stay on the call rather than disconnecting it. Whenever you face these kinds of situations, you can simply tap on the mute icon and you call will be muted. This feature works both in audio and video calls.
Video and voice messages
Another cool feature offered by Duo is that it lets you send audio and video messages. A message can be left before or after you call someone.
To send a message without calling, swipe down on the home screen of Duo. Then tap the record button and select the recipient. Messages can be recorded up to 30 seconds which is the time limit.
Disable Duo calls
Are you wondering how are you still getting Duo calls when you haven’t even installed the app in your phone. This is happening because of the App Preview Messaging feature.
There is no need to worry as you can disable this option by simply going in to the Settings of your phone. Go to the Google settings where you will find the App Preview messages. Google Duo can be disabled from here.
